Ultra-processed foods make up 60% of the average person’s calorie intake.

Americans are unknowingly caught in a dietary crisis, with ultra-processed foods dominating 60% of their calorie intake.

As Max Lugavere explains, these products are “highly calorie dense, nutrient-poor, minimally satiating,” yet “Uber delicious,” creating a perfect storm for overconsumption.

Engineered to be irresistible, these foods push our brains to what Lugavere calls a “bliss point beyond which self-control is seemingly impossible,” hijacking our natural appetite regulation.

The consequences are alarming: Lugavere reveals that “for every 10% increment in ultra-processed food consumption, there’s a 25% higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease,” highlighting the potential long-term neurological impacts.

Perhaps most concerning is Lugavere’s observation that “these foods are literally designed to be overconsumed,” suggesting that our struggle with them isn’t a personal failure but a response to intentional design.
